Planning trips that involve your dog

posted in General |

My ideal vacation is a trip to a remote cabin or park where I can go on backpacking trips with my boyfriend and my dog. We live in the Midwest, and have taken trips like this in several states, in areas like the Boundary Waters Canoe Area along Lake Superior, Itasca State Park in Minnesota, the Black Hills in South Dakota and Teddy Roosevelt National Park in western North Dakota. It just doesn’t seem right to take a trip without our dog anymore.

On all of these trips, my dog wears a dog backpack. I don’t know about you, but I find myself planning trips closer to home so my dog can tag along. He loves to go camping, hiking and run at our sides on bike rides. When I’m carrying my own gear, I don’t have the space to carry along pounds of dog food, water and poop bags. So, guess who gets to carry those? My dog does. The backpack is large enough so he can carry everything he needs for a three- or four-day trip. It’s also comfortable enough for him to wear all day.

Not only is his Ruffwear dog backpack useful for carrying a dog’s gear, but the backpack tires my dog out. He wears his back when we go on these long backpacking trips, but he can also wear his pack on trips throughout the neighborhood. He proudly carries his backpack, maybe because it reminds him of those trips we take throughout state parks and national parks.

So for any outdoor adventure you and your dog take – whether it’s to your local park or on an extended trip, consider getting your dog a backpack!
